First of all, I would like to apologize to my english speaking friends for writing in my mother tongue a lot lately. I am a russian after all....
It's Tuesday, April 15, I am at the internet cafe near our home in Jakarta, Indonesia. It's about 30 degrees outside with rain and 99% humidity. I know what you think: l-u-c-k-y!
If someone tells you that he never in his whole life experienced culture shock- send him to Jakarta! Also, if you want to completely rock his world, send him to Hawaii first))).
As a joke, while still in Hawaii, we took a pictire with a sign that said "pool closed". Little did we know... We have four different teams here and we're the only one without a pool! Now, who is gonna tell me that God doesn't have a sense of humor?!
We are actually really enjoying our cultural experience. We are staying with a wonderful Indonesian family. They even cook for us once in a while. We also have a maid. I don't think anybody knows her name. I'm not even sure if she understands indonesian. ( for sure she doesn't understand MY indonesian)).
Indonesians are very friendly. I'm pretty sure they smile even while cursing at you.
The diversity here is amazing. I've seen poor areas before, but seeing a palace right next to the pile of garbage that one calls "home'- that is overwhelming. At the same time, it's amazing to see all the western influence here. Malls, restaurants, cars, toll roads...Starbucks, Wendy's, Dairy Queen, Krispy Kreme, Dunkin' Donuts- you name it! Things are very cheap if you are a westerner:
1 hour taxi ride- 10 dollars
1 hour of reletevely fast internet- 30 cents.
1 hour of wireless internet- 1 dollar.
an average fast food meal- 2 dollars.
Starbucs's venti Caramel Maqqiato- 6 dollars!!!
Ryan is really ebjoying it here. I think this guy could make friends with penguins in Antarctika if he had to! Couple of days ago, we went to church and he was running around with kids after the service. I was looking for him, and when I found him he was sitting in a chair with some of his new indonesian friends. "What are you doing,Ry?", I asked. "Oh, Dad...I'm just playing with MY kids".
He also knows how to say "My name is Ryan" and "Thank you" in local language and uses it frequently.
Heath is doing well too. At first we weren't sure if the place we live is safe for Ryan and it was a bit overwhelming. But we're trying to be creative with the things for him to do. Like, we go to the local mall where they have a huge playground, since we don't have anything like that near our house.
I've been REALLY enjoying Jakarta. Love the culture, the language and the people.
The only thing that bugs me, is constant 100% humidity. I was shocked when I found out that it doesn't change at all! Even at 2 am!
I will post more stories and pictures later.
Love. Peace out.
